Police and fire reports
The Daily Journal publishes a synopsis of each day’s police and fire reports. The listings are compiled from public reports at the Greenwood and Franklin police and fire departments and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. The listings are not all-inclusive, but include such routine categories as burglary, theft, battery, criminal mischief, personal-injury and property damage accidents, fire department runs and ambulance runs. Such items will typically list the location and time of the incident and a brief summary of what was reported to authorities. Ambulance runs also include the patient’s name, age and hometown; type of complaint (accident, illness or injury); and the hospital where the patient was transported. Violent or unusual crimes, serious accidents and destructive fires usually will be covered by the Daily Journal in news articles separate from the police/fire report. The Daily Journal typically does not publish the names of victims of rape, child abuse, molestation or residential burglary.
Included in the police/fire report is the jail bookings, a list of all people arrested on new charges and booked into the Johnson County jail. Listed are the inmate’s name, age, street address (if a Johnson County resident) and hometown; arresting police agency and charge; bond amount and release status. People arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated are included within a separate list that follows the other entries. Jail bookings include only those prisoners arrested on new charges. Thus, a person sentenced to serve time in jail on an old charge or transferred from one jail to another would not be included. All names of people arrested on new charges will be published, however. The Daily Journal will not omit names from Jail bookings, and requests to do so cannot be honored.
